Definition

Protected Area means a region that falls under specific sustainability governance.

A clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of Nature and associated Ecosystem Services and cultural values [1].

In the European Union protected area means an area designated under the European Environment Agency’s Common Database on Designated Areas (CDDA).
