Definition

Prepayment denotes the act of exercising an option to repay funds received earlier than the nominal required (scheduled) repayment date.

Prepayment may also mean for example a payment in advance (prior to maturity) of all or part of the purchase price of the receivables assigned (the balance being paid when the debt is paid by the buyer). It is the repayment of a loan or financial obligation before its maturity date or the payment in advance for products or other contractual liability.
