Definition

Energy Certificate Lifecycle is the sequence of possible stages in the use of contractual instruments such energy certificates.

Broadly speaking the lifecycle involves the following stages:

  • Energy is generated in a production facility (plant) and supplied into a distribution system
  • Certificates are issued for the generated energy
  • Certificates are verified by a third party
  • Certificates are registered with a registry
  • Certificates are purchased by market participants
  • Certificates may be traded (transfered ) between market participants
  • End-users use the certificates to document the origin of the energy they consume
  • Certificates used (claimed) by end-users are cancelled in the registry
