Risk is defined here as the product of the probability of some event and the impact of that event on some goal.

Categories of risk are defined in terms of the different kinds of goal that the event would impact, to distinguish between operational and various forms of financial risk.

Other categorizations are also possible based on probabilities or on differences in the kinds of events themselves.
