Net Primary Productivity

Definition

Net Primary Productivity (NPP). The biological productivity, that is the rate of conversion in a given location of physical energy (sunlight) into biological energy (through photosynthesis) in the form of organic carbon that becomes available for other trophic levels in the ecosystem [1]. NPP is the regenerative rate of a stock of primary producers.
