Scrip Dividend

Definition

Scrip Dividend. Dividend paid in the form of scrip (temporary certificate) which represents the company's promise to pay a cash dividend. Occurs when earnings are sufficient but issuer wishes to conserve cash holdings. Shareholders are not offered a choice.
