Getting Started
Step 1: Create an Account
- First, make sure you understand the objectives and the mode of operation of the Open Risk Manual. It is very important that you agree to release any contributions under a Creative Commons License
- The next step is simply to request a Risk Manual account!
- If for whatever reason the self-registration process does not work, please send us an email to info at openrisk dot eu with your desired username / nickname. We will send you back confirmation of the account details and a temporary password which you should change after your first login
Step 2: Log in and Update your Profile
- Log in by clicking on the upper right corner and entering your credentials
- Create and / or update your Author profile
- For an example of an Author profile see here
Step 3: Start Adding Content
- Read the editing instructions
- Use the Discussion Pages for issues or questions related to specific page content
- Start a new article using (if appropriate) the manual template
- Use our Gitter Rooms for help, planning, projects and direct interactions with other Authors
- Use the Github Repository for issues or questions related to the wiki software itself
- Have fun!
FAQ for Authors
How do I open an account?
You are only required to have an Open Risk Manual account if you want to become an Author and contribute / edit the Risk Manual content. You can create an account by filling in the form. If there are any problems with the account creation process please contact us at: info at openrisk dot eu.
How do I delete my account?
Contact us.
Why am I being logged out?
After a period of inactivity the wiki will automatically log you out for security reasons
Why am I having trouble logging in?
We don't know. Join us at the Gitter Chat Room or contact us at info at openrisk dot eu with further details.
How do I discusss / edit a page
First note that you are required to have an Open Risk Manual account and be logged in to discuss or edit a page. You can access the links to edit / discuss or otherwise modify a page via the Page Tools menu:
I cannot edit a certain page
A few convenience pages (the front page, help pages etc) are protected. You can get a list of all protected pages here
How do I create a new page?
First note that you are required to have an Open Risk Manual account and be logged in to create a new article. To create a page simply enter the page title in the search bar (upper right corner). If the the page does not exist the wiki will offer to create the page.
How do I edit a page?
Editing most Manual pages is easy, just click the "Edit this page" pencil icon at the top of a Manual page. This will take you to a new view with a text box containing the editable text of the page you were viewing. In this box, you can type in the text that you want to add, using wiki markup to format the text and add other elements like images and tables. When you have finished editing, you can optionally write a short edit summary in the small field below the edit-box describing your changes. Further editing instructions are given here.
I got an error message when submitting the edited page
Occasionally, depending website activity and load, a submitted page might fail to be saved in the database which prompts an error message. Simply resubmitting should succeed. It is in any case a good idea to develop any longer contributions on a separate editor
What are the key features of the Creative Commons license
Content can be used freely and shared, subject to proper attribution. The content cannot be used for commercial purposes (you cannot charge other users for this content) and it cannot be branched into a derivative product.
- The non-commercial clause is aiming to deter free-riders and protect the authors contributing content.
- The non-derivative clause is aiming to preserve the integrity of a single "golden source". Differences of opinion should be accommodated within the articles. Any effort to create an alternative risk management knowledge database should not use the Risk Manual as base.
Why not just write Wikipedia articles?
Wikipedia is an epoch changing concept. Open Risk Manual entries should not replicate relevant and good Wikipedia content (instead we should make links to such content). The Risk Manual aims to accelerate the process of completing a consistent set of technical reference resources for risk management. Read more about the aims and strategies here.
